How discounts add up
A discount is taken off the price: Rs 4,999 with 30% off is 4,999 × 0.70 = Rs 3,499.30, so you save Rs 1,499.70.
Two discounts do not simply add up. “30% off, then an extra 20% off” takes 20% off the already reduced price: 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56, so you pay 56% of the price — a total discount of 44%, not 50%.
Questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount and divide by 100 to get the saving, then take that from the price. Or enter the price and the percent above and the sale price appears straight away.
Is 30% plus 20% off the same as 50% off?
No. The extra 20% comes off the price that is already reduced, so the total discount is 44%. Put the second discount in “Extra discount on top” to see the real price.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). With 30% off, Rs 3,500 was Rs 5,000 before the sale. Use “Find the original price” to do this for you.
Is the sale price including tax?
That depends on the shop. In Pakistan and India, prices on tags usually include sales tax or GST. Use the percentage calculator to add tax if it is not included.
