About the Hijri calendar

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar follows the moon. Each month starts when the new crescent is seen, so a month has 29 or 30 days and a year has 354 or 355 — about 11 days shorter than the English year. That is why Ramadan and Eid come about 11 days earlier every year.

This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, worked out from the moon’s position. In Pakistan and India each month is decided by local moon sighting (in Pakistan by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee), which is usually one day later — choose Pakistan & India above for that.

Questions

What is today’s Hijri date in Pakistan?

It is shown at the top of this page. Keep “Pakistan & India” selected; if the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced the month on a different day, set the correction by one day.

Why is the Hijri date in Pakistan different from Saudi Arabia?

Each Islamic month starts when the new moon is seen. The crescent is often seen in Saudi Arabia a day before it can be seen in Pakistan and India, so local dates are usually one day behind.

How do I convert a Hijri date to an English date?

Enter the day, month and year in “Hijri date → English”. The English date appears straight away, with the day of the week.

Are the Eid and Ramadan dates exact?

They are the expected dates. The actual start of Ramadan and the day of Eid are announced after the moon is sighted, and can be one day different.

Does this work offline?

Yes. Once the page has opened, the converter works without internet — everything is worked out on your phone.
