How gold is priced
The rate you hear in the market is for a weight of pure (24 karat) gold — in Pakistan usually per tola, in India usually per 10 grams. Jewellery is rarely pure gold: 22 karat is 22 parts gold out of 24 (91.7%), 21 karat is 87.5%, and 18 karat is 75%.
So the gold in a piece is worth: weight × rate × karat ÷ 24. The jeweller then adds making charges (banwai), which can be a percent, an amount per tola or gram, or a fixed price.
| Karat | Gold content |
|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% |
| 22K | 91.7% |
| 21K | 87.5% |
| 18K | 75.0% |
Weights: 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti = 11.6638 grams.
Questions
Where do I get today’s gold rate?
From your local sarafa (gold) market, a jeweller, or the rate published in the newspaper. Rates change every day, so this calculator does not fetch one — type in the rate you were given. It is remembered on your phone for next time.
How do I calculate the price of 22 karat gold?
Enter the 24 karat rate, choose 22K, and enter the weight. The price is the 24K rate × 22 ÷ 24 × the weight, plus making charges.
How many grams are in a tola?
One tola is 11.6638 grams. Ten grams is about 0.857 tola.
How do I convert masha and ratti?
There are 12 masha in a tola and 8 ratti in a masha. Enter the tola, masha and ratti as the jeweller wrote them and the calculator adds them up.
Can I use this for zakat on gold?
It tells you the value of your gold. Zakat is worked out on your total wealth, so a separate Zakat Calculator by 313bits is on its way.
