What is counted
- Words — anything between spaces, in any language, so Urdu, Hindi and Arabic text is counted too.
- Characters — every letter, number, space and mark. “Without spaces” leaves out spaces and line breaks.
- Sentences — ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, including the Urdu full stop (۔) and question mark (؟).
- Reading time — at 200 words a minute, an average reading speed.
How long can an SMS be?
An SMS in English letters holds 160 characters. Once a message needs more than one SMS, each part holds 153. A message with any Urdu, Hindi or emoji uses a different encoding and holds only 70 characters (67 per part when split). Each part is charged as one SMS, so a long Urdu message can cost several.
Questions
How do I count the words in my essay or assignment?
Paste the text into the box. The number of words, characters, sentences and paragraphs appears straight away.
Does it count Urdu words?
Yes. Words are counted by the spaces between them, which works for Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and English alike.
Why does my Urdu SMS count as several messages?
Messages with Urdu letters or emoji are sent in Unicode, which fits 70 characters in one SMS instead of 160. The counter shows how many SMS parts your text needs.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
It is never sent to us. It is kept in your browser on this phone so you do not lose it, and the Clear button removes it.
